13 Interesting Facts about Powerball
Even if you don’t play Powerball, you’ve probably heard about that record-breaking $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022—the largest lottery prize of all time. But Powerball isn’t just famous because of that massive win, and there are a lot of things about the game that might surprise you.
Next time you buy a ticket, keep these fun facts in mind!
1) Lump Sum vs Annuity
Powerball jackpot winners can claim their prize in two different ways. They can either receive their prize as a one-time lump sum cash payment, or as an annuity of 30 payments over 29 years.
The advertised jackpot is actually the full amount of the prize that would be paid out over those 29 years. The cash option, therefore, is the current value of the prize without adding the interest that would accrue over those 29 years.
In the case of a $264 million jackpot prize, for example, the cash value of the prize is $186.7 million. Additionally, the prize is lowered by the 24% federal tax you must pay on your winnings.
2) How Powerball Jackpots Grow
For example, the infamous $2.04 billion jackpot was the result of 41 rollovers. The second-largest jackpot, $1.765 billion, rolled over 35 times before it was finally won in October 2023.
Powerball jackpots grow through rollovers. A ‘rollover’ occurs when no one wins the jackpot, so the prize rolls over to the next draw, making it even bigger. The more rollovers, the bigger the jackpot gets, sometimes reaching crazy amounts.
3) Record-Breaking Rollovers
Some of the biggest Powerball jackpots have come from long streaks of rollovers, including:
- $2.04 billion (2022): A record 41 rollovers, won by a single ticket.
- $1.765 billion (2023): Built up over 35 draws, won by a single ticket.
- $1.586 billion (2016): Rolled over 19 times, before being split among three winners.
Unsurprisingly, these are also the biggest Powerball wins of all time.
4) The Largest Single-Ticket Powerball Win
The largest single-ticket Powerball win is $2.04 billion, claimed in California in 2022. The lucky winner, Edwin Castro, chose the lump sum payout, taking home about $997.6 million before taxes.
5) Powerball was the First Lottery to Use Two Drums
When it launched in 1992, Powerball became the first lottery to use two drums. The first drum had a total of 45 white balls, of which 5 were drawn. The second drum also had a total of 45 balls, of which 1 red ball was drawn. The odds of winning the jackpot stood at 1:54,979,154.
The two-drum game model was originally suggested by Dr. Edward J. Stanek of the Iowa Lottery and Steve Caputo of the Oregon Lottery. It was later adopted by The Big Game (now known as Mega Millions). Other games which followed Powerball’s format, and even have the same name, were the Powerball lotteries in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

6) The Most Jackpot Winners in One Draw
Powerball’s biggest shared jackpot came in 2016 when three tickets split the $1.586 billion prize. That was a wild win for those three lucky players!
7) Which States Have the Most Powerball Winners?
Some states just seem to produce more Powerball winners than others. Here are the top three:
- Indiana: 39+ jackpot winners.
- Missouri: 30+ jackpot winners.
- Minnesota: 22+ jackpot winners.
8) Youngest and Oldest Powerball Jackpot Winners
- Youngest winner: A 19-year-old from South Carolina won $35.3 million in 2008.
- Oldest winner: An 84-year-old woman from Florida won $590.5 million in 2019.
9) Powerball Odds Breakdown
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338, but there are nine prize tiers, so you can win even if you don’t hit the jackpot.
- Jackpot (5 numbers + Powerball): 1:292.2 million
- $1 million prize (5 numbers): 1:11.7 million
- $50,000 prize (4 numbers + Powerball): 1:913,129
- Overall odds of winning any prize: 1:24.9
10) Do Quick Picks Win More Often?
Quick Picks (randomly generated numbers) seem to win more often, but that’s only because most players choose them. About 70% of Powerball jackpot winners used Quick Picks, but the odds are the same whether you pick your numbers or let the machine do it.
11) Are Some Numbers Luckier Than Others?
Each number has the same odds, but some have been drawn more often. The most frequently drawn numbers in recent years include 61, 32, 21, 63, and 69.
12) Does Buying More Tickets Help?
Technically, yes! If you buy 10 tickets for example, your odds improve from 1 in 292 million to 1 in 29.2 million. The odds still may be tough, but this is a significant improvement.
13) Has Anyone Ever Predicted Correct Numbers for a Powerball Jackpot?
Powerball numbers are drawn randomly, so they cannot be predicted with any accuracy. There are no patterns to follow or any underlying system to be analyzed.
People use past results, various strategies and the most common Powerball numbers to try and predict what might come up, but ultimately lotteries are designed to be completely unpredictable!
